Desert Springs Elementary students consistently exceed district, state and national averages on achievement tests and was labeled an “excelling” school in 2004 by the Arizona Department of Education.
Assessment of student achievement includes standardized achievement testing (SAT), district testing, and the Arizona Instrument to Measure the Standards (AIMS).
In 2004, Desert Springs Elementary was one of six schools in the Paradise Valley School District in which more than 80 percent of students made at least one year's academic progress in math and reading. Performance on the state AIMS test reported in 2004 was also exceptional, with 90 percent of fifth graders meeting or exceeding standards in writing and 88 percent meeting or exceeding the reading standards.
Desert Springs is successful in providing a superior education as indicated by our AIMS and SAT-9 test
scores. Our fifth grade AIMS test scores were the highest for reading, writing, and mathematics in our
school district. Our third grade AIMS test scores were first in the district for writing, third for reading, and in
the top third for mathematics. SAT-9 results show all our grade levels to be well above district, state, and
national averages. We continually place as one of the top schools in the Paradise Valley Unified School
District and are labeled “Excelling” by the State of Arizona.

The staff at Desert Springs view assessment as a process of systematically gathering information about student learning and using it to communicate with students, families and others in order to improve learning and performance. Assessment is not an event, but an integral part of the instructional process at Desert Springs.
